Me – Off The Grid as a kid

The first post is always the hardest post to write on a blog.  It’s like introducing yourself to a bunch of people and you can’t look them in the eye. I’m an eye contact person as I believe one on one communication is something this world could use a lot more of.  If people talked, they might be able to understand each other better instead of making blanket judgements based on assumptions.

I’ll give it my best shot.  My name is Darin and I’m the Owner of OffTheGrid.com.  I’m a 40 year old guy with 3 little ones, grew up in the woods of Northern Arizona.  Caught my first fish before I could tie my shoes and tell my boy hunting stories instead of bedtime stories.  I’m  a Patriot and believe that the United States is the greatest nation on earth but I don’t think we’re perfect.  I know we have a great foundation for this country (the constitution) but I’m afraid of what country my children will inherit if we continue down the road we are currently on.  I hope our country gets back on track and focuses on the principles of what makes us great.

I’m a former radio talk show host from Phoenix, Arizona.  In my previous career, I spent most waking hours following the news, watching what was happening and then talking about it to a large audience.  As I researched topics I was going cover on my show, I noticed that many times the mainstream media left out crucial details and portrayed the story in a way that wasn’t entirely accurate by my standards.  Eventually I became aware that in order to get the real story, it was important to look at all angles and formulate my own opinion versus just taking what I was seeing/hearing/reading as fact.

My “awakening” has led me to this adventure.  I hope the preparations I am taking will never be used in an emergency situation.  I hope the food, tools and other equipment I have accumulated will only need to be used when I am enjoying the great outdoors on my own terms.  But, my first priority is my family and I feel it is my responsibility to make sure my wife and kids are in the best possible position should a disaster strike.  They are relying on me and I will not let them down.

I don’t have to tell you my concerns, you’re probably here for the same reasons.  There are just too many things that can go wrong….sure 99% of them won’t happen (asteroid / zombie apocalypse) but between terrorism, natural disasters, epidemic, war, EMP, social unrest, further economic turmoil and other concerns we can discuss later…how is that list not enough to make 90% of Americans think, “hey, maybe I should get a little bug out bag together just in case?”.

About 3 months ago, my business partner and I were looking at the vacant space next to our current business.  I’d been talking about how someone was going to open up a Survival Store Chain and have a huge customer base for about a year now.  I was surprised nobody hadn’t.  As we stood outside the vacant space, on the spot, we decided to open Off The Grid Survival Supply Store, a brick and mortar store that provides just what it’s name says.  In November, as we were building out the new store, our vision for Off The Grid became bigger than just a Survival Supply Brick and Mortar Store.  We actively pursued and acquired  OffTheGrid.com in the hopes we could create a one stop website where people could share ideas, educate themselves and each other, learn money saving tips, debate current events and purchase items for a very fair price to help with their preparations, no matter what their motivation is…basically THE place to go if you are interested in Off The Grid Living.

The task in front of us is not easy.  There are thousands of details we must complete.  What you are seeing on OffTheGrid.com is just the beginning.  To be honest with you, we had to get something up as the amount of hits our website gets daily is staggering.  I wish I could have the finished product done immediately, but as you all know, doing things right takes time.  We want to do this right.

Over the next several months you are going to see an evolution as the website grows from a simple “menu” of a small sampling of products originally meant to support our store, into what we believe will be the premiere community for everything Off The Grid.

Please feel free to comment and add your suggestions and ideas for the website.  This isn’t about what I think is important.  As a businessman, I clearly understand unless we provide what you want, success will be nothing but a dream.  You are the most important part of this puzzle.

So, now it’s your turn.  If you wouldn’t mind taking a moment to introduce yourself, share what motivated you to come here, and let me know what you’d like to see on OffTheGrid.com I’d sure appreciate it.  It will help us create a community that will benefit you and so many other like us who share the same concerns.

Thanks for visiting OffTheGrid.com, we hope you’ll continue to visit us as the evolution continues!
